Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing Overview

Tent peak is also known as Tharpu Chuli peak (5663m/18,563ft); This entire trip can be completed in 18 days. Tharpu Chuli is one of the easy trekking peaks in the Annapurna Himalaya range. The ascent requires ice and rock climbing equipment and experience. Tent peak climbing is suitable for those climbers who intend to step up from high pass trekking to amateur mountaineering. You will be climbing the standard Northwest Ridge, which is the grade at Peu Difficile (PD). Some vertical and ridge climbing sections make this climb very interesting and challenging for those attempting to climb a trekking peak for the first time. Our experience and operation Tharpu Chuli expedition is not as challenging as climbing another trekking peak because of its height and snow conditions.

Mr. Jimmy Roberts made a tent peak summit in 1956 via the Southeast Ridge. However, the Southwest Ridge, West Face ridge, is also open and has become a regular climbing route on Tharpu Chuli. Tent peak is best climbed in the spring (April, May) and autumn (September, October, November) seasons. The climbing on Tent Peak is reasonably straightforward, and the approximate Alpine climbing grade is PD+. The climb is mostly on snow slopes around 35-40 degrees and with some exposed ridge climbing. Fixed lines are to ensure that any uncovered areas are covered.

Tent Peak summit offers magnificent panoramic views of the majestic snow-capped mountains of the Annapurna region. The beautiful landscape during the trek adds yet another reason to plan a trip to this spectacular peak. When you trek along the mighty Modi River belt, you will experience the natural grandeur as well as the cultural magnificence of the most popular trekking route in the Annapurna region. The Himalayan plants, lush forests, colourful flowers, culturally rich local people, and snow-capped trekking peaks will surely mesmerise you. Once you complete the 45km drive from Pokhara to Nayapul along the Seti River, you will start your trek up to Poonhill. From Poonhill, you will have a beautiful view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

From Pokhara, it is best to start the trek from the village of Nayapul and acclimatise at several villages along the way, including Ghorepani(2700m/8,858ft)and Poonhill (3200m/10,498ft) before reaching the Annapurna base camp. The trek is roughly 7 days, mostly through forested areas, with stop-off points at the villages of Ghorepani(2700m/8,858ft), Tadapani (2675m/8,776ft), Chomrung (2040m/6,693ft), Doban (3230m/10,597ft) and Machapuchare Base Camp (3700m/12,139ft). From Machapuchare Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp (13,550ft) is a short distance, usually taking 2 hours at most. You will spend more time acclimatising before following the glacial moraine to Tharpu Chuli Base Camp. A further high camp is at 5000m. The route crosses the glacier from high camp and climbs a 40° snow slope to gain the North West Ridge. The ridge, which is broad at first, becomes knife-edged for the final 60m to the summit.
